SP2 - How to Remove - Including if you cannot boot 1

If you have a Prescott Intel processor (P4 2.8 - 3.4 Ghz, 800 FSB):

Fail to Boot into system after installing SP2 for Windows XP.

Intel Prescott P4 processors
(apparently can happen any units w/Prescott and older BIOS)

Cure...
Enter mainboard BIOS and "disable" L1/L2 cache
then enter system and "Uninstall SP2".
SP2 will be listed in add/remove programs if
you updated an existing Windows installation,
if this was a fresh install w/slipstreamed CD
then you should hurry and update BIOS as
performance is affected without L1/L2 caches.

NOW..
goto mainboard manufacturers website and update
the mainboard BIOS to latest one (Prescott users)

Then you can re-enable the L1/L2 processor/mainboard(?) caching, and install SP2 properly.
(that is.. if mainboard people updated their BIOS code)

These articles will show you how to use the Recovery Console to remove SP2.

This seems to be one update where you really should take the advice offered about backing up your system before installing the Service Pack.

I did install SP2 and could not boot past the splash screen. I was able to recover, and then remove Sp2.
I've downloaded the latest BIOS for my mb, where can i get information on how to install? I need a Flash Tool? From what I've read so far, the first rule of BIOS upgrading is don't do it if it isn't necessary. Should I risk the upgrade for SP2?

Try the ASUS site, as I believe they have BIOS flash instructions.
