we recently had to redo windows 98 and now we have no sound. when we go to device manager to locate the drive, it says to install the cd. we dont have the cd. do we have to buy a sound card?

First check the device manager to ensure that the sound card is not loaded properly - ? or red x.

If not determine the the type of sound card (open the computer and look) - delete the card from device manager and on restart see if the system will tell you the type.

Then, do a search on the internet for the sound card driver.
Download the driver, install the driver. - If needed, remove the device from device manager and restart - pointing the system do the location of the installed driver.
(with luck windows will find it on its own).

Good advice. Put simply, you need to reinstall the driver. You will probably have to delete it from device manager, reboot and then point Windows to the drivers you found.
Tip: extract the files from the download before you start the reinstall. Windows will not find them if they are still in a zip file.
