Guys on my Mom's system at home her sound quit working. Very weird actually because she claims it just stopped. To the contrary I think the younger brother had something to do with it. Regardless are there any reccomendations besides the obvious of checking the volume, connections, control panel volume , etc. Seems that all sounds stopped playing, except when she connects to compuserve you can here the connection and welcome to compuserve. But the window minimize and maximize sounds are gone. Play a game no sound, etc..

Any ideas?

Have a go at using System Restore to get back your sound. That's what they do in the XP tour guide when the little brother belts the keyboard with a hammer several times.

Will do..

Thanks linney

I have a similar problem - just some of my sounds suddenly stopped playing such as when i open and close windows put others like when i open a program play sounds and mp3s all play fine though the speakers so all connections are fine.

Have used system restore to take it to when everything was fine but didn't help.

Any ideas?

Go to Control Panel and open Sounds and Audio Devices. Click on Sounds.

"It lists the program events to which you can assign sounds. To assign a sound to a program event, click a program event (such as Close program) under Events, and then click a sound under Sounds.
If you do not see a sound in Sounds, you can click the down arrow to select from those listed, or you can click Browse to search for sound files on your computer."

Just make sure that the sound file exists on your computer for the sound you want to play.

If you are missing sound files or they have become corrupted running the System File Checker program may fix it.

Type Sfc /Scannow in the Run Box.

all sounds are there and when i try to run the system file checker as suggested it asks for my XP cd which i don't have as my HP Pavillion came pre-installed with everything.

Do the sounds files play individually in media player if you click on them?

You might have to contact HP to see what options you have regarding System File Checking.

yeah they all play fine so I have no idea what has happened - guess i'll get onto HP.

Cheers for advice

When it asks for the XP CD, can you browse for the folder. If HP preinstalled the OS, there should be a i386 folder on the hd with all of the installation files in it... If so, point the system there... If the folder is there, but you cannot browse to it, close the program, edit the registry and find the key called SourcePath.. i forgot the exact key... maybe HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup... or something similar... there you can modify the value of where XP looks for the installation files... Pls be sure to backup the registry key in question before modifying it...

I had the same problem. I found Microsoft Knowledge Base article 262256. It is for Windows 2000, but since they are very much the same, I took a chance. It solved the problem. Take a look at it.

Kelly Theriot notes:

Startup Sounds are missing:

TweakUI/General/Beep on errors (verify that the box is checked).
Restore Startup and Shutdown Sounds (Line 211)

System Sounds are missing:

Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key: HKEY_USERS. If it doesn't have a Data entry in the right pane that reads: (value not set), double click (Default) and delete it. If it does, check your HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21 keys for the same.

Restore System Default Sounds (Line 6)

Restore Media Files (Line 174)

This edit corrects many Sound issues: Fix the Ding.wav File (Line 6)
