I have a computer with a Gigabyte GA-6WMM motherboard WIN98 and the on board sound doesn't work. Went to their website and found yamaha and soundmax drivers and tried all of them. In bios it says AC97, so I tried downloading Realtek ac97 drivers and still no-go. Sometimes I get an error ADI/ICH hardware not present. I searched on that and turned up nothing that helped.
Any Pointers??

Bospruell,
Do you have the Utility CD for the motherboard? If so, you should find the audio drivers on it.

Have you checked the BIOS to see if sound is ENABLED? Also, check the motherboard jumper JP32 - pins 2 and 3 need to be jumpered for on-board sound to be enabled.

No MB CD, and yes it is enabled in bios. I will check for that jumper tonight when I get home.

it might be a bad sound card. did you try a new sound card.

Are you sure that the mother board is actually that model?

Is there a possibility you read the model number wrong?

There are a number of Gigabyte motherboards with the AC97 audio but that model doesn't seem to be one of them.

Goto the above URL and go to Realtek and download the driver from there, there maybe a difference betweeen the realtek AC97 standalone sound card drivers and the Gigabyte onboard drivers.

Or you have a dud sound card.

Rock on!!

Are you using Windows XP? There has been an issue with the AC97 drivers and XP. I tried dozens of different drivers (on a different motherboard) until I stumbled across one that worked (and sorry, I can't remember which one!). I seem to recall it was a generic AC97 driver from the Realtek site

It is win98,it is an onboard soundcard, and I found the jumper, but there is no jumper pins there. I metered it and pins 2-3 are not shorted so I will have to short them with a slodering gun when I get the chance. I got the number right off the MB and keyed it into google. I do find it confusing that the bios says ac97 but the website doesn't mention it. I will be double checking bios upgrades before I do the soldering to make sure I am not missing something software related. Thanks for the replies, I appreciate the help.

That's odd the motherboard doesn't have the headers for JP32. It almost leads one to think that the sound option isn't fitted to that board... But you'll be able to identify the actual sound integrated circuit on the motherboard to confirm that.
