I have been having this problem lately with my sound card. Every time I try plugging in my speakers my computer freezes and then I have to reboot. I was thinking it might need a driver update but it was working earlier this summer and I haven't done any updates since then seeing how I don't have any internet connection to it now that I am home from college. So I think it might also be a hardware problem but I wouldn't think that would stall the whole computer. If anybody has had a similar experience or any idea of what it is that would be cool to get some info. thanks

Id close the actual sound program that runs with the sound card. Those usually are annoying anyway. Close it and see if the locking up stops. I would definitely update the driver if you are where you can.

Try using the onboard and see if that fixes it. Obviously not a permanent fix, but that way you know if it's the sound device or that specific card/its drivers.

You say sound card, but is it really a card plugged into one of the mobos PCI connector? If yes, I suggest that you open your PC, remove the card and reinsert it, making sure that it is safely seated in the PCI connector. It may just be physical.

Yeah I think it may have been loose. It actually started working again. I think I am going to move it to a different PCI slot even though it is working now. Thanks for the help

felixc, your getting a star for that. I never would have imagined that causing a computer to lock up but now I have another piece of knowledge I can use when troubleshooting computers. So star for you on that. Very good!!

And it's not just soundcards which cause that lock-up problem either! I've found the same with some network cards and SCSI adaptors to name but two...

Another thing to watch on poorly made cards is the way the backplane bracket is fitted. I've had several where the position it's attached to the card means there's no way the adaptor's gold connecting fingers will seat properly into the motherboard's PCI slot. Often ended up elongating the holes in the card so it will fit deeper into the slot. Care needed with this mod, in case you're close to hidden pcb tracks on the card...
