Sound Card Conflict

When I add a sound blaster "live" value card to my pentIII w/ asus p3b-f computer, I have what appears as an obvious conflict that win98 does not see.
BSOD reads: C154 B31B in VXD EMU 10K1(01) *0000B71B
I assume that this is a device driver conflict refering to the emulation properties for the sound card.(maybe not?)

Properties shows no conflicts and sb16 emulation properties on IRQ 7 with an x in lpt sharing checkbox.

The card itself is set w/ I/O range 1020-103F on IRQ 9

DMA shows me 01 8bit sb16 emulation
05 16bit sb 16

Do I need 2 DMA channels for this card?
Is it possible that it really is not sharing with LPT?
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance for any response.

Soundblaster cards really love being on IRQ 5 for some reason.
I would suggest you go into the device manager and manually set this is up providing nothing else is using that IRQ.
I had the same problem with my soundcard and discovered that it was my SCSI card that was causing the problem.
There were no apparent problems in the device manager, but I had no sound.
After I disabled the SCSI card and re installed the sound card. All was fine.
I then reinstated the SCSI card, rebooted and it was reassigned no problem and has worked fine ever since.

Thanks for the feedback. I did try different slots and nothing changed. In response to eliminating the emulation properties, I will try that first and if I still have problems then I will try moving the card to another IRQ. Is this why it's called "plug and pray"?
Thanks again.

You are beginning to get the idea but you haven't had enough problems yet to use the term. <bg>

Any advice I give is my best judgement based on my interpretation of the facts you supply.

Help increase my knowledge by providing some feedback, good or bad, on any advice I have given.

I disabled the sb16 emulation and no change. Same BSOD. I tried to change the IRQ but Win98 won't let me do a manual configuration.
If I go to control panel/sounds and preview a sound, my (new) error reads: Windows cannot play the sound c:\blah\blah.wav Your sound card may already be in use.

Audio cd's play fine.

The VXD EMU 101K that 98 lists on the BSOD is the first file listed in "driver file details" under creative SB live Value Properties.
C:\windows\system\emu101k.vxd

Should I go to sysedit and remove it?

Thanks for any advice.

Try removing the card, uninstalling the drivers/utils. Get updated drivers if you haven't done so yet. Reinstall everything and uncheck the lpt sharing box and see if that helps.

I have resorted to removing the card and doing the uninstall since nothing else is working. The sb utilities uninstalled ok. The program (drivers)for the card did not though.
Error reads:
The log file c:\program\sblive\deL1.isu' is not valid or the data has been corrupted. Uninstallation will not continue.

I suppose I will try to install new drivers on top and see if I can get things to work, or at least get the uninstall to work...?
Any more ideas would be great! Thanks for all your help.

Stick the card back in, do the install, even if it doesn't work.
Go to the properties of the card in device mangler, and list the drivers. Write them down.
Anything listed in c:\windows\inf you can delete, but don't touch the ones in c:\windows\system, they're probably shared.
Remove all the stuff in device mangler (in safe mode), shutdown, and remove the card.
Restart, and shutdown a couple of times.
Put the card back in, and see if windows picks it up as PnP and installs it (it should).
After the restart, check device mangler again for conflicts (if you don't get any error msgs).
If it's still not working, go to device mangler again, System devices, PCI bus, IRQ steering tab, and DISABLE IRQ steering.
A restart should sort it out.

As of today, I am back to square one with a few changes. I do not have any sound from cd audio or any program sounds. I do not however, get the usual bsod anymore at bootup. Everything functions as if I don't have a card in....but I do have one in. Again, no conflicts in device manager.
I did notice that after doing the removing of all sb stuff in safe mode, then reinstalling, I no longer have sb16 emulation listed in device mangler, this is probably why I don't have the bsod at boot up or when running other software.
I tried disabling the irq steering and that generated alot of yellow exclamations in device manager. So i enabled it back.
I am begining to think I have a malfuncting sound card. I know it's not the most likely, but yet a possibility. If I try to play an audio cd in media player the error reads: No audio hardware available or the hardware is not responding.
My usual test of going to programs\sounds\ and previewing the sounds, the play arrow is greyed out and no action at all.
???????????

My list of drivers shows 1 that was not C:\windows\system, and I tried to remove it, but it would not let me, and I don't know how to get to it any other way.

downloading the live ware update at soundblaster.com fixed all my problems.
thanks for all your feeback, I will leave you alone now.
caio.

To everyone on here I want to say THANKS! My boss and I were in the process of setting up our Presidents PC and ran into the same error. After spending too many hours troublshooting, I found this thread through a search on Google.com and downloaded the Soundblaster Live Ware update, PROBLEM SOLVED! Thanks again for everyone's input.
