Sony Vaio Wireless Connection Issues

I have a Sony Vaio Laptop running Vista and I recently upgraded from Firfox 2 to 3. Once I completed the upgrade, I rebooted my Vaio and haven't been able to get back online since.

I can establish a wireless connection or even plug in a cable but both IE and Firefox still cannot access the internet. They both say cannot display webpage, even though I have an active connection. And when I try to Diagnose Connection Problems, Vista says it cannot find any connection issues.

I've never had any issues prior to this in Vista and it happened immediately after upgrading to Firefox 3. I tried doing a system restore to several days prior, to no avail. I uninstalled Firefox and that didn't do anything either, as expected.

Anyone have any suggestions??? Thanks in advance.

Have you tried another browser, like I.E.? Can you ping Google via the command prompt?

Burt

Yes, I tried IE and Firefox. For whatever reason, after upgrading to Firefox 3 I can no longer go online with either.

I am definitely able to establish a wireless connection though or connect with a cable. Once connected, I can log into my laptop through another computer with my Logmein account, so I know that I am 100% able to make a connection.

But when I try to open any webpages I get the message "internet explorer cannot display the webpage".

Haven't tried pinging google. How do I do that?

Ok, I pinged google and this is what came up:

Pinging [72.14.205.147] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 72.14.205.147: bytes=32 time=51ms TTL=243
Reply from 72.14.205.147: bytes=32 time=63ms TTL=243
Reply from 72.14.205.147: bytes=32 time=53ms TTL=243
Reply from 72.14.205.147: bytes=32 time=54ms TTL=243

Ping statistics for 72.14.205.147:
packets: sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost =0 (0% loss)
Approximate round trip times in milliseconds:
minimum = 51ms, maximum = 63ms, average = 55ms

When you open IE or firefox paste 72.14.205.147 into the address bar will it then go to Googles site?
If it does then there is a DNS issue.
Have you looked to ensure a proxy setting did not inadvertently get set during firefox setup?
Internet Options-->Connections-->LAN Settings

I typed that address and nothing came up. It still won't connect, even though I have a wireless connection established.

I also just checked the LAN settings and no proxy server setting was established. It is still set to automatically detect settings.

Ugh. Any other ideas?

If you can ping google then you definately have Internet connectivity. If no browser will access websites then it would almost have to be software related.
Do you have a software firewall running on the computer?
If you restart the computer in safe mode with networking can you then access webpages?

Try uninstalling the NIC and reinstalling it> I did read in another thread how someone was having the same problem, and after some upgrade, same thing---internet connectivity, pings to google succeeded (so NO DNS issue, as it resolved google to an IP address, as seen above), but the person could not connect with a browser---seems that the update did something to the NIC driver or settings, and reloading it fixed it. The way he did it was what I suggested---physically take the NIC out, power it back on, then down again, then put the NIC back in, and power back on, and let the Found New Hardware Wizard help to install it.

Ok, progress!

It works in safe mode. I have Symantic Antivirus running. And Vista has it's own Window's Security Center with firewall running.

Again, this all happened after upgrading to firefox 3. Where do you think I should look to see the problem?

Ok, I've never done that before, is it something I can do pretty easily? Where would I find network interface on the laptop?

Oh, yeah...laptop, sorry...go to My Computer, right click, Manage, Device Manager, right click on device, uninstall the NIC (not physically---just uninstalls the object), reboot, and the wizard should pop up.

Burt

Ok, so it's an Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection.

I clicked on it and it says it's working properly, but you think I should uninstall it? Before I do this, will I be easily able to reinstall it? Will I need software or anything to reinstall it?

Actually, before I do this I want to be certain I'm uninstalling the right thing.

Under Device Manager, then Network Adapters, there are a few objects. Which one of these is the one I should uninstall?

Download the driver for this first (just do a Google search).
Of course it says it's working properly...it's Windoze!

Burt

Just did it and still nothing. On the reboot it sucessfully reinstalled the drivers for the Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection. But Int Explorer is still not able to display webpages.

The 6TO4 Adapter has an error message next to it and under properties it says "This device cannot start (code 10)."

Does that have any significance? Should I try uninstalling this and rebooting? Any other ideas?

That adapter that cannot start has some sort of issue with it, obviously, and could be causing the problem. Was it doing this before, did you notice? Try updating the driver. Sony should have FAQ's and support for your issue---others I would imagine have experienced this as well, I'll bet...try Sony.com

Burt

I uninstalled it and reinstalled it and still nothing. UGH.

Any other ideas?

Open network and sharing center click Manage Network Connections on the Left. Then right click on the adaptor your trying to use and select properties.
Select continue when prompted.
Uncheck Internet Protocol V6 and restart the computer
See if you can then connect.

Supposedly from a command prompt you can reset the Vista winsock by opening a command prompt (run it as an administrator) and type in

netsh winsock reset
