Yesterday I got my new Dimension 3000 and put my Sony DVD Burner in it. It's not reading CDs and burning my DVDs super slow (50 minutes for a 8x DVD+R which normally only takes about 7-8 minutes).
First configuration
CD-RW: Cable Select
DVD-RW (DW-D22): Cable Select

I thought it might have been a jumper issue, so I switched it to:
CD-RW: Master
DVD-RW (DW-D22): Slave

WinXP Home SP2
Basically everything was straight out of the box except this DVD burner.
I tried both Nero 5 and Roxio 6, same results.

Any ideas would be great. Thank you!

Have you turned on DMA for the drives? Tried both 40 wire and 80 wire cables? Some drives like 40m and some like 80!

What's DMA? Maybe I'll do some research on that.
I do have another set of cables which I can try.
Would it help if I just had the DVD Burner connected and set that one on master?

Burners always like to be set at master, this i have found over the years.
DMA is usually enabled by win xp by default, but you should check anyway to make sure.
Look in your bios settings.

I tried it with another cable and put it on master. That fixed it, but I still wonder why it's so slow with slave...
They were both set on DMA (yes it was by default in XP).

I cant really answer that, i just know burners like to be master. From personal experience and reading about problems i have learned this info.
Not a big help, but i think its a software issue, between xp and the burning software, as opposed to a hardware issue, but im afraid thats all i can say about it.
I am self-trained, dont have the real training that others get so perhaps someone else can answer that better than i can.
