Sony DRU500A DVD writer does not recognize DVD media

I recently installed a Sony DRU500A DVD Read/Write. CD media is recognized but no DVD media is recognized. Running 450 Pentium III w/256 Meg ram. The drive was working perfectly before I installed Turbotax 2002. Removed Turbotax and the C_Dilla protection and the thing still will not recognize any DVD media

Have you gone to Sony and downloaded the firmware update? that is the first thing to try. also..make sure that you dont have DMA turned on. and also make sure that you dont have any Plextor or Nero software installed as they are incompatible with the Veritas software that comes with the drive.
Please post a response to the board so we can increase our knowledge.

I downloaded and installed the new firmware from SONY (2.0E). I removed Nero Burning Rom 5.0. I downloaded DVDINFO (

which returned: Command 0adh returned: Sense 02h - Not Ready, ASCQ 00h - Medium incompatible. I have used this drive to record over 80 data DVDs with Veritas with no problems with read/write - now it seems that the whole DVD side is caput.

are you sure its the burner and not the disk? have you ran a head cleaner on it? I've noticed that using non-branded or cheap DVD's result in major data errors and in making several shiny coasters. Try sending a note to Sony, maybe they can help.

well, if it's still under warranty I would suggest you contact them and send it for repairs. if its not under warranty then you may still wish to get it repaired but will be a bit more expensive.
