Sony cd-rw treated as cdrom

I have problem with a new cd-rewritable Sony48x.I have install it to computer with Win98 and was working fine for 2 weeks.After 2 weeks Nero5.5.9.0 reports no cd-rw.I also moved it to a computer with WinXp and i have the same problem.Note that cd-rw is working fine as cd-rom drive and bios setup for ide is auto.There is no problem with operating system , because after i installed a new cd-rw exactly the same Nero works fine.
I wonder if the problem is with the firmware and if is possible to change from a virus.
Any help will be appreciated.

I would say the drive has become faulty. You say it is new, contact the supplier, it should be still under warranty Help us to help you, please post back and tell us if this helped.
All things are possible except skiing through a revolving door.

I agree, i will contact my supplier, but if anyone has any idea what is the problem will be appreciated.
