Sonicwall firewall slows response time down

I have a main network with a Sonicwall Pro200 firewall, and a branch office with a Sohicwall SOHO3. A netware 5.1 (sp6a) server sits behind the Pro200 and the 2 firewalls are connected by a VPN tunnel. The tunnel runs over a 100MB backbone. Simple right ?

It takes at 45-55 seconds to copy a 6 MB file from the novell server over the tunnel, as opposed to 6 seconds on the local LAN. The response time is so horrible, I'm thinking of just switching to NT. Copying the same 6 MB file over the tunnel from an NT server takes just 15 seconds.

I have tried changing every setting I can think of on the Novell Client 4.90 which I'm running. I've tried XP and Windows 2000 workstations but neither is better than the other.

If anyone can think of any way to speed up the IP access to this Netware server I would appreciate it.

What is your connection to BOTH NetWare servers (IP, IPX or mixed)? Right-click on the Red N in the system tray and go to NetWare connections and tell us what you see listed there.

Both are IP - the workstation I'm testing from only has IP installed, no IPX. One is a directory services connection, the other bindery.

This may be heading in the wrong direction, but I would see if you can make both connections DS, not bindery. Also, there was lots of chatter about the 4.9 client. 4.83 had its share of problems too.

Although many of these are old, they have helped at many locations (old and new) that I support:
