I'm getting the dreaded ERROR: 720 when I try to connect to the internet...

some background info:

NIC is an Atheros 8121 Gig...

things I've tried:

uninstalling the NIC and reinstalling it...
uninstalling the TCP/IP stack and reinstalling it...
resetting the TCP/IP stack (netsh int ip reset)
resetting the winsocks (netsh winsock reset catalog)
looked at the MS KB 810979 article...

more info:

dual boot system, Vista works without any problem...

anyone have more insight?

Wait, you are referencing an error that occurs on Dial Up connections, but your hardware is a wireless card hence no PPP issue can be had.
What exactly are you doing?

----------------------------------
Ignorance is not necessarily Bliss, case in point:
Unknown has caused an Unknown Error on Unknown and must be shutdown to prevent damage to Unknown.

I don't know what OS you are using, but you could take a look at these two MSKB articles: 123298 and 811259 (the latter also refers to a netsh winsock reset).

Personally I would give this a try: remove the wireless drivers, shut down, remove the PCI card, power on, shut down, put the wireless card in another slot, reboot and install drivers. It seems like a hassle, but I've seen this method resolve some exotic problems before.

I think this post is talking about updating drivers and some sort of Network problem?

p5q - atheros 8121 - kein netzwerkkabel

What if anything is coming from the Event Viewer?

Any luck with less Security programs running or using "Safe Mode with Networking"?

Following "vacunita's" point can we have the full description of the Network Card, the "..." can sometimes hold significant clues for us mere mortals?

Sorry, if it was a bit unclear, about the hardware in question...

NIC: Atheros AR8121/AR8113/AR8114 PCIe Gb LAN controller (VEN_1969&DEV_1026&SUBSYS_82261043&REVB0), it is not a WiFi or Wireless card at all, but a cabled NIC... and the first driver was directly from the CD that came with the motherboard version 1.0.0.19, then I updated to the one from Atheros itself, which it lists as version 1.0.0.37 but in reality it is 1.0.0.28 (device manager)... I am also using a CAT7e to the switch and from the switch to the ADSL modem, from the switch to the other PC's I am using CAT5 cables...

@Linney -
" can sometimes hold significant clues for us mere mortals?
Linney, don't sell yourself short there... LOL... thanks for the LINK, but it talks about cable detection and how to circumvent that problem... I've another lead, which talks about switching out the original drivers and to use Open Source drivers, will see about that one tomorrow, and will post results here...

@Vacunita - to put it simple I am trying to use the build in Hardware to be able to connect to the internet... Local area networking works like a charm, and it works in VISTA without a hitch, so there is no hardware failure... and that is why I do not understand why it is giving me that ERROR as I do not have any DIAL OUT connections under the Internet Options listed... seriously, this one has me stumped...

@YellowOnline - sorry if I am being a bit facetious, but I posted this in the XP PRO forum thus the OS in use is XP PRO... and thanks for the links, even if they did not apply...

@anyone and everybody - ideas are welcome...

Interestingly, here's 2 different articles that seem to indicate that you need to do a little more than just what's listed in KB810979 - specifically, making a modification to the netrasa.inf file. One is a VPN discussion here at TT, the other is on the lenovo forum and unrelated to VPN

Sorry for that, I looked the Card, and it came up as a WiFI adapter so I assumed. Having the exact numbers yielded the correct type of card.

Anyway I find that amazingly peculiar.

At what point exactly do you get the error?
Does the error appear when you attempt to open a website in a browser?

Can you Ping any internet address from the command prompt?

I'm assuming the other computers connect fine to the internet through the same ADSL Modem.

I hope "Smah's" links, or your own further research solve this for you, but if I was a gambling man I'd be taking bets on a repair install coming up. Not meaning to be negative, but it sounds like something is awfully corrupted on your machine, perhaps from the battering you have given it in an attempt to solve the problem?

Why does Vista work and XP refuse to do so, it is more often the other way around? I can only assume that the XP drivers have been developed over considerable time and like the operating system, should be a stable item.

Again if I was a gambling man, I'd bet that if you stuck BartPE's CD in the drive it would be on the Internet within a few minutes. Same thoughts about a parallel install of XP.

Having said all that, there is hope for you, as I have never won anything in any wager.

When you look in the properties of the network card what protocols are present?
When you look in the connections tab of Internet Options is there a dialup connection listed?

Ben, any results from a PING to an Internet IP Address? Any oddities in your firewall relating to the browser (IE7?) that you're using? Not using Zone Alarm without that patch, are you!?

I know you want to use the in-built hardware, but is it worthwhile just temporarily bunging in a bog standard Realtek 8139 and see what happens?

Keep us posted on your progress Ben.

Hmmm!
I need to know exactly how your dual boot is set up:
Is it set as Xp/Vista on the same partition?
Is it different partitions/drives?

Have you assigned a known working DNS to see if it’s some type of DNS error that is giving you issues?

If it sees the other computers I would grab the DNS to your ISP from the router and assign it to your TCP/IP or I would assign the router IP address to the DNS on the TCP/IP

Try that then post your results

Thanks to everyone for the assistance... Yippie... it is working now...

here is the low down, but I still do not know what fixed it actually...

After the first link that Smah provided, and me trying to fix it as described, it did not work and to boot my network connections to the other PC got axed as well..

so I decided to go ahead and do a REPAIR install, which did not help with this either... next up was the installation of a Realtek PCI NIC, which got recognized and the drivers got installed, but still nothing (turned out to be a bum card)...

Now I was getting a bit frustrated and was about to do a clean install, before that I had a notion to try another NIC, a DLink DT528, it too got recognized and I installed a driver...

strangely it started working... I got Internet over both the build in Atheros NIC and the DLink now...

perhaps installing the DLink drivers somehow reset a setting or the WAN-Miniports, besides that I am at a loss...

just to answer some questions that came up:

@G0AZ - I couldn't even connect to the internet, so no ping would have worked... I wont touch ZA anymore, since the day that it blocked my whole network (about 4 years ago), I am quite content with COMODO... also there was nothing with IE nor with FF....

@Lemon13 - thanks for that input, but Arcor uses PPPoE and no VPN tunneling...

@Linney - LOL about the betting thing...

@Vacunita - there is no need to apologize, as the provided information was not complete and everyone knows Atheros as a Wireless chip maker... but thank you for the input none the less...

@smah - the TT link did not work... and the Lenovo link is a verbatim copy of the MS KB I mentioned in the opening thread... so no go, but thanks...

@Firewolfrl - though this info is no longer needed, the dual boot was on two seperate drives, both SATA in IDE mode... the other suggestions I'll keep for future reference when I cross another similar hurtle...

Thanks for the write up - glad to hear you've solved the problem!

Glad you fixed it and I hope you have no more episodes like that. We need you here, to fix things around here, rather than having you fixing your own machines.

Fixing is a form of learning... I still had internet, so there was no real worry about not helping around... ;-) thanx for the heads up...

Roger, I wish I knew the solution to the problem, I am still at a loss as to the explanation, and that irks more than the original problem... guess I will have write this one off as a T-Z glitch...
