Serial 0 is up , line protocl is up

Hardware is MCI serial

Internet addres is .........................

MTU 1500 bytes, BW 1544 Kbit, DLY 2000 usec, rely 255/255, load 1/255

Encapsulation HDLC, loopback not set, keepalive set (10 sec)
--------------------------------------------------------------

The meaning of the IP address and the Bandwidth 1544 kbit is crystal clear to me. I don't understand the following:

What is the difference between S0 and S0/0?

I know that 'S' stands for serial port.

What is the meaning of Seril 0 is up and line protocol is up?

What is Hardware is MCI serial?

I know there are different types of encapsulations. Here it is HDLC. Why can't it be PPP?

What is the meaning of 'loopback not set'?

What are keepalives? Are they data packets?

I hope someone could shed light on the above quesitons.
