I have a 40g maxtor on a P3/win98. I temporarely installed the HDD on another computer (p4, w98+w2000), BUT, to my surprise, some files (20gb of movies and stuff) were gone...

The folders were still in place. Some files were ok. Some files were corrupt (600Mb of 000000) Both on win98&w2k. Resarted it, scanndisk-ed it; nothing.

Went back to the old computer, the files were there and OK!

How can this be?

The hdd is secondary master on the first comp. and primary slave on the second.

Does the second machine have any other issues? (this soundsl ike a hardware problem - but I'd expect other manifestations without the temporary drive...

nope... the second machine does't have other problems.
had some trouble with chkdsk on a 120gb HDD but solved'em by fdisk-erase&create again partition.

Could it be a IDE-cable problem ?
I can;t set in bios the access mode (UDMA5 or smth)

Is there any kind of file compression or encoding program on the first machine that isn't on the second?

No, there is no encoding program.
just plain old FAT32.

It's very weird.

Hard drive autodetect (in BIOS), may be seeing the drive parameters differently.

that might be it.. i'll check the parameters on another computer.

I have also noticed that on the first computer (the one that can "see" the files) strange stuff appeared: folders with 200Gb of %^&$%&*( and stuff like that.
I tried putting a 20gb cap limit (jumper on hdd) but it won't boot at all.
Scanned hdd with maxtor's diagnostic program and it turned out OK.

Also have some problems copying files: moouse begins for a few 2-3 seconds not to respond, then it says Read error. Mouse is back but file not copied...
