Hi

For various reasons (i.e. to change server name etc), I had to rebuild our SMS server recently (rebuilt with SMS 2.0 SP3, SQL 2000).

I removed the subnets a couple of days before the site was downed to give the clients a chance to uninstall.

To catch any other clients, I set the SMS client deinstallation key:-(HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\SMS\Client\Configuration\Client Properties,
Value added: SMS Client Deinstall, Data: TRUE)

I have set the site back up as before but am having problems – about half the clients are not installing.

I have looked at regedt32 and have found that the HKLM\Software\Microsoft\SMS\Client\Configuration key is greyed out. No matter who I log in as, you can’t delete or change permissions for the key. The only thing you can do is take ownership of the key and then define the relevant permissions.

In regedt32, read only is not turned on.

If you use regedit and select the HKLM\Software\Microsoft\SMS\Client\Configuration, you get the error message "Cannot open configuration. Error while opening key".

I have checked and double checked the boundaries. They are are exactly the same as when I last set up the site and are correct.

I have looked at the clicore.log. One error in there says "Warning - couldn't update C:\WINNT\MS\SMS\core\bin\cliunins.exe".

Another log (wn_logon.log) gives the error messge "ERROR: Could not get executable path from registry."

I have tried both smsman and smsls.bat to install the client and have the same problems with both.

The clients are NT4.0 and W2K.

The server is W2K with SP2.

Does anybody have any ideas why this has happened or what I can do? Ideally, I do not want to have to visit every PC on site.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Matt

Hi
Have a look at one of the problem clients and check out the reserved registry size (control panel\system\performance\change)
I have had a couple where the agents would not install due to the size of the registry hitting the limit set.
hope it helps

Hi

Thanks for your input into this.

However, I have addressed and resolved every problem PC on an individual basis.

Thanks

Matt
