Hi All

help one of our engineers was in doing a routine backup last night and and after rebooting the box it keeps giving the error

INIT: cannot create /var/adm/utmp or /var/adm/utmpx
failed write

it says its entered single mode and type root password but the keyboard is unresponsive and does nothing, also says hit ctrl - d but this does nothing also

Thanks Marrow

I cannot type commands i am sitting at a prompt for single user root password but nothing i type appears to do anything.
I am suspecting i may require the boot cd's to be able to run any commands but dont seem to be able to find them either

Hello PaggaG,
Do you have LOM or ALOM i.e. hit #.
> break -y
hit return
> console

would normally take you to boot prompt,
then either sync or boot -s again

Hi Marrow

Dont know much about unix sorry to say just know a few commands thats always got my by.

Its an enterprise 3500 not sure what version will pop up and have a look and post back in 5

In that case, I don't think you'll have the LOM facility, but you maybe able to hit STOP A (this issue a break)
to return to boot OK prompt
then sync or boot -s

Hi Marrow

triedthe above box just reboots and returns back to same point

looks like unix version V release 4.01

when i hit stop a i can choose from the boot options how would i go about booting from cdrom

use a cdrom (or jumpstart bootserver) to boot into single user
ok boot cdrom -sw

fsck all filesystems you have; mout the filesystem containing /var
how does it look like? is it full (100% usage)?
how do the /var/adm/utm* files look like? You can trim them, if you don't need the contents (cp /dev/null /var/adm/utmp;cp /dev/null /var/adm/utmpx).

If you are running mirrors you should fix this on both sides or remove second disk (remember the Quorum!) and resync after a reboot.

reboot and press thumbs

Thanks for the help guys

looks like i cant do anything without my boot cd as nothing else seems to work

Did someone change the permissions on thevscripts, /var/adm/utmp or /var/adm/utmpx are sytem only writable, these log login information.

download the solaris images, use disk 1 and

boot -s cdrom

once in mount the root slice

mount /dev/dsk/c0t0d0s0 /mnt check the file permissions from there

or do as defranz has written

these files are critical to a system boot

hi guys,

I am relatively new to Solaris and am currently studying towards a cert in it.

I try to boot from the CDROM on a blade and it returns the error, "CANNOT OPEN BOOT DEVICE" what do I do ?

PLZ help
