When you say "every so often" does this mean that it is not at regular intervals? When the server can't deliver a message, it is stored in the queue. It will retry to send it for as often and as long as you tell it. After that it should get flushed. Generally you wouldn't flush it from the queue until after 3 to 5 days in case there is a problem with the recipient's server. It could be that your e-mail can't be flushed the regular way so you may have to go in there and be brutal. Just wipe out the darn thing.
