I do not even know if I am in the right place but here is my question. Can a user (me) find out what programs are installed on his/her pc like Office 2000, Norton Antivirus, SQL server Enterprise and such. I am finding that if I go to all the pc in the company to do my software inventory and license check that I am not getting all the programs in Program Files and add/remove programs. I need to be able to find out what is on all pc. Is there anything that can look at the registry or something? I am sorry if I posted in the wrong place.

Thanks
Kenny

Here are my suggestions from another thread:

There are hundreds of packages that do this. Most of them provide asset management as part of a "Help Desk" package. Usually they have a small client program that runs on each desktop that performs a hardware and software inventory and either sends the data directly to a master database or creates a file that can be imported into the central database. Most have evaluations available. Here are three I can think of off the top of my head:

I haven't lost my mind - I know it's backed up on tape somewhere ....

The company that I work for also provides software and hardware inventory discovery. You can purchase an initial company-wide inventory audit as a once only service (to get a base line inventory in a hurry), or install ManageSoft 6.0 for ongoing automatic inventory discovery and reporting for desktops, laptops and servers. If you are interested see

We use OCS inventory:
"Open Computers and Softwares Inventory
OCS Inventory is an Open Source tool to help Network Managers keep track of computers and softwares on the local network.

The inventory agent is a small executable that can be run from the login script for each user. This agent scans client computers for hardware configuration and installed softwares, and stores the results into the central database on the server. Viewing reports and managing configuration is done through a Windows graphical interface or through a web interface built in ASP 2.0 which allow you to use your favorite web browser"

A brand new program called SysTrack 2.0 is in beta right now; should be ready for sale in a couple of weeks. (It's predecessor has been out since 1998) This new version not only gives you software inventory but also hardware inventory and shows you changes to both. I also monitors applications, users and systems if you need that soft of thing. It even runs on disconnected machines (ie: laptops) then reports all this information the next time the machine is connected to the network. We have been beta testing the software and it looks like we do some kind of purchase when the product is ready. Good luck!

Been told about the following:

Apparently the server costs money but the client / agents are free. Not played with it yet, but wil be doing so. Its cross platform which is useful for Mac/PC/Unix companies.

Hi all,

Is there any method whereby I can stop other workgroup members from accessing workgroup "ABC" if they are sharing the same router, i.e. same backbone but not the same SERVER?

What is the possible configurations/settings that are available so that Workgroup "ABC" is totally isolated from other workgroups? However, members from the same workgroup "ABC" can still share files and surf net by tapping on to the same back bone.

Any advice would be deeply appreciated.

Thankx.

Tank.

You can also try the Belarc Advisor. I don't have the address handy but a search should find it easily. There is a free eval/personal use and there is more capability if you want to use it on corporate basis. It discovers hardware and software. Very complete and accuratre as far I can tell.
