Soft Switch Vs PBX 4

What are peoples thoughts in general about the new technology we are dealing with??

What advantage is there to having a Soft Switch running on a server over a telephone system. You still need a 'box' to do the call processing.

There seems to be a trend that everybody wants soft switches but what serious advantage is there over an IP-PBX using digital handsets with soft switch and IP handsets.

using digital handsets you release the load on the company ethernet network and use VOIP for linking sites and remote workers.

Stu, re: your 4 Sep 06 8:03 post. I do not disagree. Even though I included the "he said it a few uears ago" disclaimer, the fact is even back then you could get fine voice quality. I guess I look at the comment my associate made as "an interesting point" that would be true in a typical poorly planned install. Your point is well taken, as the goal is to do it right, rather than assume it will be done wrong.

Another thing I've found....

Our Option 81 got hit by lightning yeaterday taking out several cards. Still struggling to get parts working (along with maintainers). If it had been one of our softswitches we could have a whole new system in place in a couple of hours. The Meridian is still screwed 24 hours later. However, in it's defence, it is still mainly working, even with several parts down.
