Forgive my newbieness but I need a little help understanding proxies.

Here's what I think I know (please correct me if I'm misinformed)....
- If I use a proxy server, my IP address will appear to be different than it really is. But somehow still tracable back to my real IP
- Anonymous Proxy servers somehow allow me to be seen with a different IP and NOT tracable back to my real IP address. How does this work anyways?
- Socks proxys can do more than the HTTP protocol.

Questions:
- are socks proxys anonymous? and free?
- other than taking a websites proxy lists word for it, how do I really know if I'm anonymous?
- I've installed and used SocksCap and managed to get it working with .torrent files. At least I 'think' I have it working. Is there a way to have a list of socks proxys for SC to refer to? Similar to importing a list in SwitchProxy (the FoxFire extension). Rather than just have one IP address at a time?

Hi, the very reason for the existence of proxies is to hide your IP address. A proxy (at the best of my knowledge) will always make your IP untracable.

The anonymous proxies (or remote proxies) are for caching and masking your IP like every others proxies does.

The socks proxies are ancient technology, now it's Winsock and can support large variety of standards and customs protocols.

You can go to the excellent Steve Gibson site at and run "shields up" to verify that you're really anonymous. The server will scan your ports and show the IP you're seen with (the IP of the last proxy in the chain).

ex:

workstation 192.168.1.2 ---> proxy lan 207.35.X.X ---> remote (anonymous) proxy 210.12.X.X

For the rest of the internet, your IP is 210.12.X.X

Feel free to ask more details if there is more you want to know.

Hope this helps. Please let know if this resolve your issue

the first 2 points aren't clear to me. So regular and anonymous proxies are the same? I can use both in the same way?

The reason I was looking at SocksCap is because I wanted to be able to use BitTorrent and download files anonymously. So I was looking for something that did more than http protocols.

Is the Winsock proxy client something I should install to achieve this? Is it easy to configure?

I've been to Shields Up a few times, mostly just to check security.

Hi, winsock proxy client is proprietary of ms proxy 2.0.

When you grant yourself "unlimited access" to the winsock proxy service access control, no configuration is necessary "in most cases".

And yes: regular and anonymous proxies are basically the same. A way to hide your computer behind it and navigate in anonymous mode.

Bittorent should work just fine...

If regular and anonymous proxies are the same - how come when I use Charon, it distinguishes between the two? Is one slower than the other?

As far as the Winsock Proxy Client goes... is this software I install?
I have IIS locally. But of course, I don't want to setup a server. I just want to access a proxy server.
