Need to set up a socket for transferinng a data stream from my network to another network across the internet. The remote IT person and I have agreed on a random port, but how can I secure this transfer? The use of sockets for transferring data is new to me.

Try Net::EasyTCP . It's a great client/server module with transparent compression and encryption.
