The quick answer to your question is: No, it depends upon the design specs of the chipset & motherboard manufacturer.
On the other hand it's not uncommon for a BIOS upgrade to allow a faster CPU to function with an existing motherboard. This is occurs, because as fast as a motherboard can be produced for certain spec CPU's, the CPU manufacturers are producing new, faster versions of existing CPU's.
If you simply plop a faster socket 462 CPU in your motherboard, it may not be compatible with your current BIOS; and therefore will not work.
You'll have to check the web site of the motherboard manufacturer to confirm whether any given CPU's are compatible. Specifically, check the explanation of each BIOS update to see what it does. It wouldn't be surprising to find at least one update that addresses compatibility with faster CPU's than the original motherboard specs.
