I have been getting hundreds of sobig F messages (outlook express 5 for macintosh). I have deleted everything suspicious and have checked for viruses with both virex and NAV. Is there anything else I should do? I don't think I have the virus but I just want to be sure. No one has e-mailed me to say I have given them the virus. Since I deleted all my saved messages it has improved but I am still getting weird and suspicious e-mails. I have considered using another e-mail program when I upgrade my computer. Any ideas? Thanks much.

Did you say OE 5 for Macintosh?!?!?

It wouldn't matter if you did receive the worm. It only works on Micro$oft Windows OS PCs. I assume you have OSx for Apple.

Hi there, thanks for your reply. I wish I had OSX. It's in my future when I have some income coming in. At the moment I have the completely outdated OS 8.6. I know my computer can't get the virus but I am getting e-mails saying that I have sent the virus to other addresses that I have never heard of. It's very annoying to say the least since I don't know what to do to if anything at this point. It isn't worth investing any more in this old computer I don't think. Thanks for any ideas, or just reassurance that I don't need to worry that I am giving this nasty thing to others somehow.

Howdy:

SoBig spoofs email addresses..

ie: System A has the SoBig virii and NO up to date av program.. They have your email address as well as 10 others in the Contact List..

SoBig searches the Contact List and selects an address (yours), places it in the "From" box and then proceeds to email itself out to the other 10. Those without an active av program receive the email, open it, get infected and the whole scenario starts over..

Those with a good av program stops the email because it catches the SoBig virii and returns it to the sender.. YOU !!

Until the infected system is found and cleaned, you can expect a pile of these..

Yes, many piles!! Thanks for helping to elucidate. I have never had to deal with this before and hopefully never again. What e-mail programs do you recommend when I upgrade that will take this problem away? Thanks, phyllis

Hi Phyllis,

Regarding checking your system, we have similar issues with older versions of the Mac OS - I recommend that you 'network' to a Mac running OSX and a copy of NAV 9. Those machines which are running OS8/9 and the most uptodate NAV that can handle (6?), never find the virus themselves; but searching these disks using NAV 9 running on another computer, gets it every time! As we use Eudora, it's easy to find attachments. spooled files, parts etc. - you should also be sure that you know excatly where Outlook dumps these things, and that these locations are being scanned. For this reason at least (ease of managment) I would recommend Eudora as a switch/upgrade, but whatever you do (esp. when you move to OSX) don't go near Apple Mail - a nightmare application!

Good luck!!
