i have a 200 server that a third party has build (badly)
afraid a rebuild isnt an option

i've service packed it and all updates on now

have removed snmp service and reinstalled

on reinstalling you get

"one or more services for the simple network management protocol component took more than their alloted time to start" then basically restart and it should be ok

but it's not
i get

could not start the snmp service

the service did not rtn an error. this could be an internal windows error or in internal service error

tried looking for tids but no joy
nothing in event log that useful

Don't know how familiar you are with SNMP on Windows, but take a look at extention agents. These are basically dll's that are hooked to the standard agent. They provide an extention to the the basic MIB that is available by default. They come with a lot of system specific agents e.g Compaq Insight Manager, Netscape web server etc...
Normally when your SNMP agent starts, it read the registry to check if there are any such extention dll's to be loaded. (do a find on SNMP in the registry and you should find them, have now PC handy where I can check)
What I've seen before is that there is a problem with the extention agent which makes the standard agent unstable.
You can re-install the (third party)agents or remove the reference from the registry so they aren't loaded anymore ...
Let me know if this helped!

there was nothing
the server was cloned

it's getting fdisked

Hello,
i had the same problem.
after a reboot, the popup " at least one service didn't start successfully" , and it was snmp.If you try to restart it, you get "could not start the snmp service on local computer. the service did not return an error. it could be an internal windows error or an internal service error. if the problem persists contact your system administrator"
deinstall reinstall services : you get the message :
"one or more services for the simple network management protocol component took more than their alloted time to start"
SOLUTION: the snmp is in conflict with another snmp agent.
in my case, it was OracleSNMPpeerMasterAgent . it was ok after stopping it and restarting true snmp. And you may restart OracleSNMPpeerMasterAgent after that. I think there is a conflict on the tcp port they both use.

So, try to stop all other snmpAgents to see if it solves your pb.
