I'm interesting in using SNMP to monitor our 7-8 servers. The problem that I'm having is determining which front-end for SNMP is the best solution for monitoring. What is everybody's experience with their SNMP monitors? What features of each have been helpful and which have not? Thank you in advance for your advice!

gclass ,

there is small disadvantage with SNMP ,which can slower your traffic rate on the network . SNMP poll or traps utilize some of bandwidth regularly .
Auto-discovery or other Network discoveries can slow down your network because of contineous ICMP packets.

hereon , i will suggest you to use specified Trap-console tools or Active SNMP watch tools .where you can define your domain within certain limits .
and also u can upload product related MIB;s to get more approprite alarms or Event information from SNMP-enabled Agent or Object .
there are several free trial downloads on internet such as

if your network is large then you can go for CA;s unicenter TNG .

cheers

Aaaahhh! Run away!

(sorry, involuntary response)

Unicenter is big, expensive, a resource hog, and did I mention expensive?

For 7-8 servers, it's not an option.

I have used Openview Network Node Manager. As far as I'm concerned it provides a generic SNMP framework. Since your buying into a framework and not a total solution, your satisfaction will be gauged by how much effort you put into customization of the product. I don't really care for the polling aspects to determine if a device (Router Interface) is down. I have written a Multi-Tasking Perl script with SNMPv1 that is front ended by NNM. I process about 8 traps, plus some RMON traps, that ended up providing a very clear representation of the operational status on a Cisco network.

Perl SNMP is very easy to implement, to my knowledge, only V1, V2c is available through Perl. At this stage, I have toyed with processing traps through UCD SNMP, in hopes of eliminating NNM.

Thank you all for your feedback! I have tried out (almost too many!) SNMP programs and have found all the ones I tried to be at the very least... interesting... The best of the bunch were NetVigil and SNMPc. Each I recommend.

I use MRTG to monitor ours

I have set up up to graph many more things besides bandwidth. I use it on RedHat. It's pretty painless to set up and if have the MIB's for the devices you want to monitor you can basically graph any thing you want.
