Besides the usual daily Mitel backups, a snapshot so now and than would be great.
I always heard that snapshots of running (Mitel) servers are not allowed.
But why?
Is it because of interrupted voice during the snapshot?
Or is it the Mitel OS/(MSL/ESM?) that coudn't cope with it, and causes corruption?

Does it matter if it's mivb 8 or 9?

You can schedule a backup of the MSL which will backup all the DB including all the blades.
MSL snapshot is not recommended by Mitel. Although it may work, it will not be supported.

Clever men learns what Wise men shares!

snapshots add load to the servers
why not use veeam if you want images?
i run the free veeam in our office - it uses the vmware snapshot as a means to create a server image and then removes the snapshot to avoid the loading on the server.

If I never did anything I'd never done before , I'd never do anything.....

I understand: do not use snapshots:)
As I mentioned, I do make an automated daily backup of the ESM and a weekly of the MSL.
We also run a mivoice cluster, so the primary mivoice VM may fail.
From an architectural perspective, I am investigating what is best.

We even do have Veeam.

So my question is, and I'll suppose it may depend on whom you'll ask it:
In case of a disaster, should you revert from a daily Veeam backup or an OVA + weekly MSL + daily ESM (BTW, when using mivb v8, does the MSL include the ESM?)

Am I correct that both are okay,
But an ESM restore is more robust and reliable in case of a corruption and would be preferred? Especially when you'll ask a mitel tech?

When no mitel tech is available, a Veamm restore will do?

In our case, mivoice is also fed by MiCollab. So after a restore:
What happens if the phones switch back from the 2nd MiVoice to the freshly restored (and thus older database!) 1st server?
Will all changes made on the 2nd be synced to or overwritten by the new 1st?

And not only an admin could have made changes, also a user activating e.g. a call forward.

So you have two connected mivb's and also MiCollab?
Please imaging what will happen is those are not in sync and even worse, totally not in sync. That will happen when you put back a snapshot.
Just don't do it.

BAZINGA!

I'm not insane, my mother had me tested!

tlpeter, good point[2thumbsup]
So, what will happen to the cluster if I restore a one day old Mitel backup?

Well, i never tried :) Maybe corruption?
