Snap Gear IPsec connection SLOW!!!

We have an IPsec connection setup from New Zealand to Australia using Snapgear Pro VPN routers both sides.

I am finding the IPsec connection very slow. Is there something I can do to increase the speed\performance of the connection. I am not sure if we have a MTU fragmentation problem. Maybe we should increase or decrease the MTU for this tunnel??
Our connection in New Zealand is a bit better than it is in Australia. Both sides have ADSL. Internet access is fine both sides. PPTP connections to NZ are fine to.

Any help would be great.

read somewhere mtu=1400 in the cfg file somewhere in router at server level. hope this helps.
