Hello,

I found a related thread regarding my problem, but the solution did not solve my situation. I apologize ahead of time for the similar post.

I have a W2K Advanced Server running IIS on an internal network. This is my web server. I am using ASP and CDONTS to try to send E-mails from the web site. Unfortunately, it is not working. I noticed that the SMTP Virtual Server was not installed, so I installed that, but it still is not working. I've been playing with the settings, but have had any luck. Something to keep in mind is that the web server is not the mail server, whatever difference that makes. The mail server is another machine running Exchange 2000.

On the relay window there is an option to use a smart host or DNS....? I am not clear on what all this means, but I have been trying the smart host option. What I did was plug in the IP address (surrounded with []) of the Exchange server. I am nto even sure if this is what they are expecting there. This didn't work, but DNS is not installed on my web server, so I didn't have any other choice. I am now in the process of installed DNS on this machine, but I am not sure how to configure it to get this working.

ANY troubleshooting tips/ideas/suggestions/etc. are very welcome. BTW, I am very confident that it is not the code. I've used this code in other places successfully, and I am getting messages posted to my BadMail folder within InetPub/mailroot/. I can post parts of those logs if necessary.

Thanks!

In what way is it SMTP not working? Are you getting an error message? Are the mail messages stuck in a particular folder?

I have also been working with SMTP on our IIS server which is not our Exchange Server. After the Win2k service packs were installed we found that rights to certain directories had been changed. In particular, the \documents and settings\all users\application data\microsoft\crypto\rsa\machinekeys -- the error is "object already exists"
These are hidden folders... see KB 294274 for details -

I also use a smart host. We just type in the full domain name for our exchange server...that didn't work until our exchange administrator set up relay permissions on the exchange server to permit relays from our IIS web server.

I also found help at when searching for "e-mail does not work properly" and "Why does my CDONTS mail hang out in the queue or pickup fiolders?"

Hope this helps.

Judith

I am not getting any errors. The messages hang in the Queue folder under inetpub/mailroot/ then eventually end up in the BadMail folder. I think I need to configure the Exchange server as well.

Thanks for the link. I'll check it out.

Why dont you just put your ISP's Smarthost in to the Virtual Server ?

Avoids any change to your Exchange servers set up.
