Hi

I'm new'ish to Exchange 2000 and have just replaced our old Exchange 5.5 server with a new 2k server and now have a problem

I can send emails both internaly and externaly but I can only recieve internal emails, nothing from the internet

I have configured a virtual smtp server but it is nothing like the IMC in 5.5

have I missed something?

were do I put in the details of the domians that we have?

Thanks

is the MX record in your ISPs/web hosting company pointing to the IP of the virtual server? sounds liek you may have it pointing to the old server still. or did you use the same IP?
it would prevent you from having this problem if this is the case...if not let me know

Also check to see that you have configured the Email Address Policy (in Recipients Policy) for your SMTP address to "this Exchange Organisation is responsible for all mail delivery to this address" option. This indicates that your server is hosting your domain namespace, eg. @yourdomain.com

Hi

Thanks, I tried the above but we can still only send.

I have added all the domains that we should recieve email for and the server has the same IP address as the old server

but still no emails

I have looked on the knowledge base article 325321 and followed this as well

Thanks

Michael

i assume you have anonymous, basic, and windows authentication enabled on your smtp server??

no youll need it

do you have a firewall? do you have the right ports open on there?
what is your exchange config (as in frontend/backend, or standalone)?

Yes there is a firewall which is a Watchguard soho that has built in services and smtp is set to forward to the internal ip address of the exchange server, I asume that this is on port 25

the server is Small Business Server 2000 and I have installed all the service packs so is standalone.

also I can telnet to port 25 behind the firewall but not from infront of it

would this be normal if the server is secure?

are you COMPLETELY sure that port 25 is directed to point to the internal LAN and not the DMZ (common mistake since its usually just a drop down :)

if you are set up like this:
FIREWALL
^
SERVER SERVER
^ ^
CL CL CL CL

then telneting to port 25 internally will not be affected by the firewall...since you're not using it...

it sounds like port 25 may be just set for outgoing and not both ways....possibility?

your statement:
"also I can telnet to port 25 behind the firewall but not from infront of it"

tells you right there that the firewall is blocking it somewhere along the way

Hi

it's started working

I had to setup the smtp connector again and the I created a new virtual and stopped the default one

I have also setup the services again on the firwall and I have pointed the following to the server DNS, POP3, SMTP, NNTP

all seems to be ok

Thanks for all your help
