SMTP protocol error occurred

I have an exchange 2000 server that has no trouble sending emails to any domain except one which is bellsouth.net and was able to send to them until about three weeks ago. When I check the properties on the queue for this domain in the Exchange system manager it states "An SMTP protocol error occurred". I can telnet to the remote SMTP server that I am trying to send to without a problem but the messages sent through Outlook never leave the Exchange queue. Any suggestions? Thank you.
