Greetings,

Our e-mail seems to run smoothly enough, but in the outbound queue, there is three companies that we doo business with, that there e-mails are just sitting there. One of them has 16 messages. I force connection but it just goes back to "retry" state. Any ideas?

If you click on that queue/ message you should be able to tell us exactly what it's retrying.

For example
- Is it unable to contact a GC / DC?

This is always a possibility
- Is there a problem with the connector? (try recreating SMTP connector).

Hmmmmm The connection was dropped by the remote host.

And no we're not blacklisted and not open for relay. I checked that.

Is rebuilding the SMTP connector a pain and will I lose any e-mails?

Well, I do "C:\telnet theirdomain.com 25" and get a 572 Relay not Authorized. I did do this right, right?

Grrrrr Broke down this morning and called Microsoft. Back in Febuary we went to Exchange 2k from 5.5 on a different server. I had our MX record changed to reflect the new server but there was also something called "pointer record for reverse resolution" that was still looking for the old e-mail server. It's a wonder I don't have a drinking problem.

I'm having the same problem on our Exchange server. There are a few domains that get hung up in the outbound SMTP queue. Most work just fine.

I've found some vauge information on the pointer record for reverse resolution, but nothing that gives me a hint as to whether we have a problem or how to fix it.

Can you elaborate on what you found and did to resolve your outbound SMTP problem.

Thanks

Of course, I called the company that hosts our Domain Name and had them change our pointer record to our e-mail server. I had them change our MX record back in Feburary because our old e-mail server "severname.domainname.com" was change to "newservername.domainname.com". So we were getting e-mail in and out but when companies change to reverse DNS lookup, our pointer record was still pointing to our old e-mail server.

I thought when you change your MX record they automatically change the pointer record. Shows you how much I know.
