SMTP not working

We have SMTP configured on a Server 2003 system, which had been working fine for years until a couple of months ago. Now, emails sent from the server are erroring out, but only when being sent to particular email addresses. I am able to send test mails from the pickup folder to gmail just fine, but when sending to my company's corporate email, they do not go through and the message goes to the badmail folder with the following:

Unable to deliver this message because the follow error was encountered: "This message is a delivery status notification that cannot be delivered.".

The specific error code was 0xC00402C7.


The message sender was <>.


The message was intended for the following recipients.
johnsmith@example.com
ADMIN@example.com

Any ideas? I find it strange that I can send to certain emails. I don't really know where to start troubleshooting this, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Ensure you have an RDNS entry and SPF record in public DNS. Make sure you are not on any RBL lists.

I recently had RDNS set up by our DNS host. Not sure about SPF. Looks like we are listed on a couple of RBL lists. We have been listed in the past, so I had RDNS set up in hopes of fixing the problem, but it looks like it didn't work? According to CBL: ATTENTION: This IP is infected with, or NATting for a computer infected with a high volume spam sending trojan - it is participating in a botnet. The IP address is a NAT address, so I'm not quite sure what the best course of action would be. I'm contemplating the following: 1. Running a protocol analyzer like Wireshark to see if a host PC in our network is sending out spam. 2. Set up an ACL to allow SMTP traffic only from the servers that need to use it. Any suggestions?

You need to lock down access to your SMTP. Do you have Exchange?

We're not running Exchange here locally. Our email is hosted from another location at Corporate. By locking down access to SMTP, do you mean only allowing access to the SMTP servers that need it, and blocking port 25 for all others? Through an ACL, or is there another way to do this?

Below is a snippet of the SMTP log. Changed IP's and hostnames of course, but does this tell anything? Should the port at the beginning of the log be 25 instead of 0?

Been a long time since I saw SMTP without Exchange. Refresh my memory here, does sit add to IIS? If so look on directory security tab there to restrict access.

Yes, it is added into IIS. I've been delisted from the blacklists for the moment (this may come back), but I find it strange that I still cannot send emails to certain addresses. I can still send them to my gmail account just fine. This is so frustrating!!!

OK, so within IIS, restrict access to the SMTP server for now to just one test machine that you have scanned for malware/grayware.

Keep in ming that just because you have been removed form the RBL, it will still take a while for companies to download the latest list. You may have to wait a while.
