I'm not sure if I'm having a problem, or rather this is not my issue, but here is the scenario.

When my users are sending mail to a particular domain, the mail message appears in the SMTP queue as "host did not respond to connection attempt." The wierd thing is that they are reporting no e-mail problems on their end.

My SMTP is configured to use an external dns in advanced delivery options. I read about this exact problem on the MS knowledge base when using external DNS, but supposivly it should not effect me since I have service pack 3.

Any ideas?

Most likely an TCP/IP issue. I would try some of the following (Note that I don't know how your network is configured)

1. From the Exchange server try ping an internet address if Echo is enabled through your firewall. Ask Sysadmin to enable temporarily if possible

2. Try to telnet to the external smtp server from the Exchange server like so : C:\> telnet extrnl.smtpsrvr.com 25

Be sure to make a space and 25 after smtp server name. If you cannot connect, you know:

a. They can be blocking your domain
b. Your DNS setup isn't working correctly
c. your Exchange box isn't configured properly

3. Try conneting via telnet again from your firewall or from outside connection from your organization like from home or something.

These things should help you find the problem. Also, is the problem only with that specific organization??? The problem could be a rule somewhere that's blocking your organization from sending mail to them. For example, some orgs that aren't secure and spammers have sent spam through get put on a blacklist that's synched throughout the world and everyone that subscribes to these list will block you if your org is on it. : 0

Gude luk if U're on 1
