Hello,

I have a friend who use's AOL as his ISP.

The problem that we are having is that he has just purchased his own domain name along with hosting & email.

He has an email address set up, info@hisdomainname.com

We have the pop & smtp mail settings:

pop.adeyhost.co.uk
smtp.adeyhost.co.uk

I have been reading up on AOL (I cant stand AOL)with regards to email problems.

1. Is it possible to send out on smtp.adeyhost.co.uk using AOL as an ISP?

2. If not, is there a solution to resolve this issue, othere than using a different ISP?

Thanks in advance for the help & support.

Cheers,

Kona

I can't swear to this, but I would certainly think so. But, you'll need to use a real mail client software (outlook express for example), not that AOL mail interface. I just telnet'd into that server and it answered (of course I don't have a username or password on it, so I couldn't do anything).

That only gives Aol's ip/mail servers.

He just needs to use a mail program (OUTLOOK or Eudora is fine) and use that to retreive email from his own domain.

You should be able to retrieve you're POP email. You might have problems sending via smtp.adeyhost.co.uk. You might have to use AOL's smtp address to send.

I had an opportunity to try this recently when my cable modem went out and I had to resort to using AOL via a dial up connection. [sad]

I was able to retrieve all of my email, accessing a number of different POP servers. I tried to send an email message, not using AOL's SMTP servers. One time the message went through ok and the other time it was rejected. When I resent the one that bounced, it went out fine. I didn't have time to research the reasons.

YMMV, since I'm in the USA and it looks like you're in England.

Many ISPs now require that you utilize their SMTP server while connected to their network (anti-spam measures).

Best regards, thelp
