I have SMS 2003 up and running but I now have to rename my SMS Server. The site code is not going to change. I am not that worried about the database, even if I have to gather all the info again from scratch, because I am in an educational environment and all my student PCs are changing anyway. My query is, do I need to uninstall the SMS client or will my new server detect and be able to use the client already installed from the old server.

I don't think you can change the server name and SMS function properly. I asked on a newsgroup and a MS rep gave this reply,

"The server name, site code and domain name are stored and used in many locations in the SMS infrastructure during setup and configuration. These include named paths to CAP shares, etc. There is currently no tool to go find all the instances of these (SQL, Registry, WMI, etc.) in all the places on all the SMS servers and fix them up.
