I am in a shop that runs SMS 1.2....

it is being suggested that the mear fact of running SMS causes excessive network traffic.

I do know (or have seen) that the sms client when you remote control seems to use a lot of resources, but I can not rightly see where network traffic comes into play.

is anyone aware of the various overheads of this product? is there a white paper floating around? I am not a network person so I don't have access to network monitoring products.

any assistance appreciated.

I have done network utilization testing with SMS 2.0 SP3. Percent network utilization was negligible for remote control, very small for inventory, but significant for package deployment. I tested both mandatory and non-mandatory deployment. At times, >60% of the total bandwidth was used. This should not be a problem for switched networks, but can be a problem for shared network environments.

Hope this helps,

thanks,
my biggest issue is around remote control, and I guess maybe inventory, not any of the deployment issues.

I have seen the remote control exec (or what i am told is) taking a significant about of cpu on the target box, but cannot see where that would translate to network traffic.

thanks for your comments
Paul
