ok - ill try to be complete here.

I have set up a Win2k3 std svr box, win2k sql with SMS2003. I have a 2nd Win2k3 std svr test box also.

Install probs included
1 - running as local admin initially b4 adding them to domain admins grp
2 - DHCP Ip address so DNS was unhappy

Both fixed - no errors in event log for security access / application etc.

I initially tried to do a network discover on IP range xxx.xxx.xxx.0 mask 255.255.255.0, read probably needed SMNP installed after no pc's appeared in the collections.

Then i thought OK will go the easy route (and get the network discover running later) and added the 2nd PC to the AD for the SMS box. Then ran an AD discover - still no pcs.

Then not knowing how to install the client (i thought it just pushed from the server - and cant push to a pc cant see...) i installed the admin console onto the 2nd box - it has no probs in seeing and connecting to the site server main SMS box.

But even after that the site server box doesnt see the 2nd box in the collections.

Hmmm - this is probably something really obvious to more experienced user (or even newbs with functional eyes / brain combo)... :)

1) Make sure that you have setup your site boundaries properly. This is done by right clicking your SMS server name in the SMS console and choosing properties. Then click the Boundaries tab. You can set boundaries by AD sites or by typing in IP subnets. If you have a small environment, I would just type in the subnets that you want to be able to manage in your SMS site.

2) The next step is to discover the clients. To do this, you will have to choose a discovery method. The most straight forward is the Network Disover which basically pings your network. One thing to note here though is the schedule. When configuring the schedule, place the start time at least 5 mintues ahead of the current time. This is because it takes some time for SMS to process the information. If you start it too early, the discovery will fail.

3) After you run your discovery, you may have to update the Collection membership and refresh the collection. Go into the SMS Admin console, find the ALL Systems Collection, and right click it. Choose ALL TASKS --> Update Collection Membership. After this runs, right click the collection again and choose REFRESH.

You should see your machines in the right hand pane under all systems.

Before you can install the clients using PUSH, you have to configure PUSH installation under Site Settings.

I was on the right track but according to the doco you dont need to enable "extend schema" for sms if you are using network discovery of IP range as boundary...

Didnt work for me but when i extended schema it did work, there must be something else going on...

If i find out further what was happening i will post here for general info :)
