Hello all,

I have recently attempted setting up an SMS site. I have the server software installed, it is discovering systems just fine... I have been trying to manually install the client software as I do not want to distribute the software to all of the systems on the domain. The manual client install will run just fine, it will give an error message at the end saying that the installation is complete, however there is no SMS server available to configure this computer.

Does anyone know what I am missing?? Do I need to add a setting to my PDC in order for the client to find the SMS server? The SMS server sees the client, the client is just not finding the server. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Flossie

Sounds as if the client is not seeing the CAP. Have you created a CAP for the SMS Site? Also, do you have the computer's subnet configured in Network Discovery?

You might want to enable logon discovery for your site momentarily. Enable this from the admin console from the following: client installation methods > Windows Networking Client Installation then Discovery Methods > Windows Networking Logon Discovery. This will enable logon points on your PDC and BDC's and shars as well as install SMS services on those boxes. Once those shares and services are installed, smsman install should find a site server.

Be certain that you have the modify login scripts unchecked.

When I try to do this it states that it cannot find the SMS server and that I have to manually enter one. When I try to enter the server name (machine name) of the server that is running SMS it throws an error. What am I doing wrong?

Is this SMS 2.0 or SMS 2003? Are you using the Advanced Client?

How are you performing the SMS client installation? using CCMSETUP?

Yes, I was using CCMSETUP, however, I have now been able to add the machine to my collection and the client appears to have installed, even though the client flag in the collection indicates NO wierd...

Is there a way that I can use SMS to simply copy a text file from the server to the client once per day? Do I have to go through the package creation for this?

The "NO" indicated that either the client hasn't reported to the SMS Site server via Inventory (did you enable hardware/software inventory in the site settings?) yet. or your client may not be "talking" to the site server.

To verify if the client is talking run these tests on the client:

Test 1: First, on the Start menu, click Run and type point name>/sms_mp/.sms_aut?mplist.

Expected Result: If you see a blank screen instead of an error message, the request is successful.

Test 2: Next, on the Start menu, click Run and type
point name>/sms_mp/.sms_aut?mpcert.

Expected Result: If the request is successful, you will see a long list of numbers and letters.

Also, look at the client to see if it is receiving policies from the SMS Site Server:

o Double Click the Systems Management icon
o Select the Advanced Tab

Make sure that a valid site code has been detected or entered....on the advanced tab.

? It is very important to verify that the proper SMS 2003 Components are installed and ENABLED on the client. The SMS 2003 Component installation and version numbers can be seen in the System Management Properties on the COMPONENTS tab. Note: All components will be installed by default in SMS 2003. However, look for components that display as ENABLED. Only when the SMS client is properly “talking” to the SMS Site Server, will components show as ENABLED.

(yes create a package to copy the file.)

Both tests were successful, so that's good.

However... dumb question:

I can't seem to find the systems management icon on the client...

Oh..then the client is not even partially installed...

just check the c:\windows\system32\ccmsetup directory log files for the error...

The logs there specify that the installation was successful... from what I can tell that is. Wierd.

Post the last 20 or so lines in the log file...

Can you tell from the control centre which workstations have picked up advertized packages?

and you don't have a CCMSETUP service running or an SMS Agent Host service running?

Was this your CCMSETUP.log or Clientmsi.log? I need the CCMSETUP.log...

Check Control Panel again...just to make sure the Systems Management ICON hasn't shown up.

Thanks...

(Yes...from the SMS Administrator Console, you can run the ALL ADVERTISEMENTS report to see running/ran/scheduled advertisements)

It was definately fom the ccmsetup.log, not the clientmsi.log

I will check for the services, and the control panel...

thanks again for all the help!

Holy Cow! It was there! And there is an SMS host service running!!

I had to enter that 3 character code though and the console is still showing no for client and assigned

In the Systems Management applet, click the ACTIONS tab.

Highlight the "machine policy retrieval and evaluation cycle" and choose Initiate Action.. Then highligh the hardware inventory cycle and choose Initiate action..

Wait 5 minutes... then go into the SMS Administrator Console...expand the collections, right click ALL Systems and choose ALL Tasks, UPDATE COLLECTION MEMEMBERSHIP....then right click collection again and choose REFRESH...

This should update the data...and hopefully you will see the client as installed.

Also, in the Systems Management applet, click the COMPONENTS tab, you should see some components as ENABLED. If you do, your client is properly talking to the SMS Site Server.

If all of the components shown are INSTALLED but not ENABLED, you probably have a problem... (The client will install with all components as INSTALLED....only after the client talks to the SMS Site server's managment point, will it get the site properties and ENABLE certain components...)
