I have a SMS 2003 server up and running but in the last few days clients are not responding to the starting the remote tools even though they are on the machine and reporting back as per the site defines. When I start the remote tools it says remote control agent not found. We have a mix of xp and 2k amchines and it's happening to both. Any help would be great.

Did the Remote Tools Client Agent get disabled on accident? To check, go to :

Site Database->Site Hiearchy-><Site Name>->Site Settings->Client Agents

Then right click on "Remote Tools Client Agent" and select properties. Once up, ensure that the "Enable Remote Tools on clients" is checked.

If it is, I would go and confirm that on a clients machine by going to Control Panel->Systems Management->Components Page and ensuring that "SMS Remote Tools Agent" has a Status of "Enabled".

If all else fails, you can always try re-installing the agent to a small collection and seeing if that fixes the problem. You sould be able to do a push installation, just be sure to check (select) the "Always install (repair or upgrade existing client)" check box on the 3rd screen of the Install Client wizard.

All pretty basic suggestions, but its amazing how often those are the ones we overlook :).

I checked the remote tools and everything look fine there, I have also checked the local machine and they have all the correct setting for the clients and the remote tools agent is enabled.

I also tryed the reinstall and that has made absoultly no diffrence.

Thanks for the suggestions tiefight if you can think of anything else please let me know as this is weird.

I also have some more information on the problem, using the SMS console you cannot connect and says it can't find the remote control agent. Then using the remote.exe tool in the smsadmin pack to the ip adderss work fine. Then if you go back to the console all is fine for a day then it breaks again.

You might also want to check to be sure the SMS remote service is enabled and started.

Eesh, that is odd. Is this happening to all of your clients, or to just a specific few? If it is just a few, is there anything those clients have in common as far as installed programs or what not?

My next guess was going to be some type of firewall/domain restriction between your machine and the client's on the Remote Tools ports, but if it is working from the exe and not from the admin console, then it can't be an access problem.

When you run the admin console, you are doing so as the same user as is running the remote.exe tool, correct? i.e. your not right clicking and running as when you launch one of the two?

The problem is happening with all client on the network and it all started at once. I though it might be a sms config error but have found nothing to suggest this. I am running the remote tools and the sms client with my user which has the correct permissions. All these machines are without firewalls as well the only constant thing of all the client that are not working are when looking at a netstat the 2701 port is in listen state on machine that work and not on the ones which don't. which means there is something blocking the client into the correct run state on the machines.
