I am running a pilot of SMS v2 SP3 now upgraded to SP4 in my office which amounts to 30 machines 25 Workstations 5 Servers in one IP subnet/boundary in a single W2K Domain , all Workstations and Servers are W2K.

The problem is that although all workstations and servers are discovered and assigned in the SMS system 6 of the workstations will not fully install the client. Most of the machines including successful and un-successful installs are Compaq EP/SB's with plent of disk space pre-installed with W2K and joined to the same domain, some installing the client OK others only partially.

On checking the SMS client in the machine only SMS client base & Available Program components are listed as installed, the A.P. component does not have a version number though.

Have deinstalled with SMSMAN and UNCLI20 batch file and removed from SMS system, I have then re-discovered and installed client again using NT remote installation, SMSMAN and Network logon installation methods, all repeat the problem stated above.

Anybody have any ideas what to try next?

Hi

You should check the log files in \winnt\ms\sms\logs on the client. This might give you a clue.

I've had a similar experience and discovered a solution totally by accident on 2000 workstations.

We had a PC that needed printer sharing enabled and had SMS client problems. Once we enabled File and Print sharing the client completed its install and was fully functional in SMS.

I think, though dont quote me on this that it was a problem with the Server Service.

Give it a try, hope it helps.

J.
