SMS 2.0 SP5 on W2K server,
The core components, Windows Management and Available Program Manager all install on my clients. All others fail and say Not Available on the client. Here is a peice of the ccim32.log file:

Component "Software Distribution" needs to be installed
Trying to open IPC connection with APM...
ERROR: Unable to establish a connection with APM - The system cannot find the file specified.
Warning - Could not process optional component command; retry on next cycle

Anyone ever seen this error? Microsoft support site keeps pointing me to the same article about client version mismatches or multiple sites or an OFF2k fix that I never loaded.

Thank you,

from faqshop:
Since we did have the funlove virus on this server and NAV cleaned it, apparently the CRC got changed. This is referenced in Microsoft Knowledge Baser article 246331 'SMS: CRC Checking and Installation of Client-Side Hotfixes', which I had on my desk, but I kept thinking it was a permissions problem, not a virus problem.

What we did to fix it was to turn off all client agents, all Windows Networking Logon Client Installation and Discovery and anything else that puts out files or shares on other servers or clients. Once these were gone, I did an "upgrade" from the original SMS CD since the files on the SMS server were all changed from being cleaned. When I "upgraded" off the CD it copied out the new files to the SMS Server and when I put the CAPs and SMSLogon shares back out there after the upgrade the files were good copies with a good CRC.

Viruses are quite common so its good to know that:

They DO affect the SMS server even after being cleaned and

SMS CANNOT spread a virus; it is nearly impossible since the SMS files require the CRC to be correct. If it isn't, then SMS won't install the components onto the client.

When you say do an upgrade, do you mean loading SP5 again or reloading SMS 2.0 from the BackOffice CD over the top of the current installation? If the latter wouldn't I have to load the Service Packs again?

Actually this wasn't "Me" writing that it was from the link,

But as I read this the virus thery had replaced some files sms uses and the av software deleted them instead of cleaning (cleaning wouldnt work as they were replaced)

By running the sms cd it replaced the files and as you said you would have to reload the SP's.....that kinda bites. I would probably try a restore from tape (not the database) or just running the SP, but I have no clue what would happen at that point.

If you havent had a virus I would disreguard this!!

Tim B good luck!

Actually we did have a virus, funlove.4099. When I first read this I thought it was strange you had mentioned the funlove virus when I didn't even mention it in my thread. I am going to try the steps and see what happens. Thank you. Jonas
