SMS 2.0- Do we need WINS anymore??

Hi,

Does anyone know if WINS is still needed for SMS 2.0 to work properly?

If, suppose, you have an environment where all SMS Site servers and Component Servers are Windows 2000 and higher. Suppose you also had all SMS Client machines using Windows 2000 OS or higher.

Is WINS resolution still needed?

Our organization is trying to get away from using WINS and are trying to do all resolution through DNS.

As far as I know you still will be needing WINS with SMS 2.0.

I installed SMS 2.0 just using DNS. It ran alright but we had problems and I was told by Microsoft the WINS was necessary. I have since upgraded to 2003 and am integrated with Active Directory and no longer require WINS.

Thank you for your replies. I have also engaged Microsoft to determine if WINS is needed in my situation running SMS 2.0 with SP5. I will post the findings here but I think your all right and WINS is required.
