Hi there,

We're having a fair few problems with SMS 2.0 at the mo - this is one of our major ones.....bear in mind that we've discovered, assigned and installed clients (NT based network).

When a bog standard user logs on to the NT machine, and opens Control Panel to check for the Advertised Program Icons all they get is two unrecognisable icons which they can't do anything with. These are shown as the Microsoft unrecognisable file format. The System Management icon is also missing from Control Panel. Nor is there an Advertised Programs Icon in the system tray. However when you go into the SMS snap in/advertisement status it looks fine, package is advertised etc.

However, when you logon as an administrator or you put the user into the local users group and logon with that account then the icons are there and fine. This obviously points to a permissions thing i.e. The user has to be a
member of the local user's group or an administrator.

With a network of approx 3000 machines we don't want to go round adding every user to the local users group on the brick - it's obviously something we're doing wrong.

Any ideas? It seemed to be going OK up until running into this snag.

Thanks in advance if you have any ideas - if not cheers for taking the time to read this.

P.S. Even if you set the Package to run automatically it doesn't work. I'm pullin' me hair out here.

Hi Chris and cheers for getting back.

Yep, we're running SP5, could it need reinstalling?

I've just remote controlled to a couple of PC's, we can view the hardware and s/ware inventory on the PC's and logged on to the PC as an admin, Advertised Programs seem to be fine.

I've noticed that there are a few problems i.e. Sites not being discovered, but this is the biggie. The s/ware installation was the main reason we went down the SMS route.

What's really weird is this, within our domain, we can advertise packages to a PC set to run when no user is logged on and they run OK but this will not work anywhere else.

I'm so confused, it's all very well doing a MS Course but in the real world it's a different matter!

Be cool if you have any ideas.

Thanks a lot.

look in your 'SMSCLI.log' and see if you see this in there:

ERROR: Failed to get path to client language resources: GetSMSPath Error #10002 $$<smscpl32.cpl><Mon Dec 15 09:08:05.096 2003><thread=453 (0x1C5)>
ERROR: Cannot display control panel icons $$<smscpl32.cpl><Mon Dec 15 09:08:05.096 2003><thread=453 (0x1C5

either way if your not seeing icons its probably a permissions problem. the fix for this case was to add the global domain user group to local machine user group

If not I'm thinking its still gotta be a rights thing

Hi there, log looks fine.

It is definately a permissions thing, I'm gonna edit the logon scripts to add users to the local group.

Thanks very much for your help on this.

Regards.
