SMDR help please 1

I am trying to hook up an computer to my smdr port on the partner phone system. What kind of cable do I need to use? I have run an eight wire phone chord from the phone system to an adapter that plugs into the computer's com port. That does not work. I have even tried reversing the sequence of the eight wires in the phone chord so the are the exact opposite at each end. This also did not work. What am I doing wrong?

I believe you need a 355A adapter which goes on your computer's serial port. The adapter is available at a Graybar. The data coming out of the Partner is serial.

This is the DB9F to RJ45 connection I use and it follows the RS232 convention:

DB9F RJ45
DCD 1------------2 ORANGE
RX 2------------5 GREEN

N/C 6 8 SLATE OR WHITE N/C
RTS 7------------7 BROWN

Using this wiring plan you can buy a DB9F to RJ45 adaptor and just plug it up and use it for either a SMDR or a Merlin ADMIN or a Merlin (maybe partner) Mail or Messaging unit. It works for me and only cost $2.99 for the adaptor.
