A vendor suggested to me that we could collect call logs if we setup a SMDR collector and software, which he quoted at <$1000.

It seems an RJ45 to serial connector's really all that's required to recieve these logs. Is there open source freeware or shareware software for collecting and parsing this info?

I should Google before I post. :)

Lite version available for $50, 5 user Advanced version for $525. I've not tried this, though download.com shows there's a free trial available.

SourceForge has a project called OpenSMDR...

I just need the time to setup a scrap machine with Linux and the package.

I hope this helps someone, and isn't construed as advertising of anything but the fact that you should at the least Google before you go asking questions.

To establish a connection between a serial printer or computer and the processor, you'll need one of these:

If all you want is a way to trap raw data, you could use Hyperterm or use a serial printer (probably ok if the office doesn't experience high call volume).

If it ain't broke, I haven't fixed it yet.

I spent some time creating a custom program for SMDR. It basically sends all SMDR info to a SQL Server, then uses a web-based application to query the database.

I never quite finished it, but it does the job for what we need it to do.

If you're a Micro$oft shop, and running MS-SQL, it may be something that could work for you.

Heck, I just like to dump it to an Excel Spread sheet.

It doesn't take much to build a macro to help get it in an easy to read/sort format.

I used this trick to do a traffic study for one of my larger clients and it worked quite well.
