SMC Router - IP Address

I've purchased an SMC Router recently and had a question about it:
I'm currently with a DSL provider that offers dynamically allocated IP addresses (i.e. everytime I connect to the DSL provider I get an IP address allocated to me!) This makes it hard to put up an FTP server to share files with friends. I thought the problem would be solved if I get a rounter installed, since the router would maintain a connection with the DSL provider regardless of whether the PC was on or off.

After installing the router however, I noticed that everytime I restart my computer I notice that my IP address still changes. The router doesn't seem to be able to maintain the IP address.

Do you guys know what I'm doing wrong! Is there a setting in the router that would keep hold of the IP address?

Thanks

The only way I know of attaining a static IP address is to buy one from your ISP. I have a dlink router switch connected by DSL. Once every few days my external IP address will change, and there's not a whole lot I can do about it. If for some reason I want to change my IP addy, I just unplug my router switch and then just plug it back in, and DHCP assigns me a new one. If anyone else has a suggestion as to how to get a static IP without paying for it I'd like to know...

You have 2 options - if your ISP provides static ip addresses you can do that; or you can use software that will e-mail you your ip address when it changes. If you are set up via DHCP router or not IP address will change.

I have dynamic assigned IP from Charter Cable and I've had the same IP for like 3 weeks now, lol. Even if I disconnect things for like 30 mins it still pulls up the same IP. No, I'm not confusing it with the DHCP address the router assigns my computer either. What DSL provider? Charter doesn't allow any form of server on their residential service.

I have a dynamic address with my ISP and I use a piece of software called dns2go. I install monitoring software on my server which checks my ip address like a heart beat. I then get a fully qualified domain name that I get to choose. Example mydomain.dns2go.com the software company holds my address and resolves the name. I have both a web page and an FTP server running at my house. There is a fee for this but it is worth it to me, being able to reach my server to download or upload files using a FQDN.
