I had, at one time, enabled a Smart Host for outgoing mail under Delivery/Advanced on the Default SMTP Virtual Server. The Smart Host is a virus/spam filter. My Exchange Server is on our internal 10.x.x.x network; the Smart Host is on our 11.x.x.x DMZ. The Exchange is NATed to 64.x.x.6, the Smart Host is NATed to 64.x.x.4.
So when I have the Exchange set to forward to the Smart Host, the internet headers (on a message sent to an external account) show that the message was received from 64.x.x.4; through the Smart Host then to the internet.
When I remove the Smart Host setting, headers should show that the message was received from 64.x.x.6; straight from the Exchange server to the internet.
The problem is that whether I have the Smart Host set or not, message headers still say the message was received from 64.x.x.4. So it appears that the Exchange server is sending mail to the Smart Host even if I haven't told it to.
Is there some place in Exchange settings other than Default SMTP Server Properties/Delivery/Advanced that deals with smart hosts?
