Small Network Problem

Computer A (Win2000)
Computer B (Win 98)

It used to work.

Using Realtek 8139 LAN cards with CAT5 cable.

Both computers on same workgroup

In Explorer Computer A can see a network with both computers but only it’s own drives. Computer B
can’t see a network sometimes and when it can , only Computer A’s drives.

Both A and B are set up for file sharing and for Client for Microsoft Network

I forget as I really don't use or work with Win2000 - but, I do know that it is tricky getting Win98 computers to recognize Win2000 shared drives, there is something a bit strange you have to do when initially setting up the share on the Win2000 computer. I can't remember what, so hopefully someone else can help you out further. Else, just start playing around with the configuration of the Win2000 share.

Hey there "w7zr",

I've had similar problems w/ 98se on a p-2-p (Peer-2-Peer)
Anyway, have u tried to verify that Cmp A & Cmp B both have their hard drives actually shared?

For based on your "E" (E-Post), it appears that u only have file & print sharing enabled along w/ the MS Client component. Hey R U only P-2-P or R U connected sometimes to a 2K / some other server?

=S0T=

Additional Info:

I went into B (Win98) machine and right clicked on each drive to set sharing. However when I tried to "ADD" a name and rights I got an error "You cannot view the list of users at this time. Please try again later."

I am logging into both machines with same name "User".

I am not an expert in this area.

However, I had the same problem before and did not know what was wrong.

I reinstalled win2000, and the only thing I rememeber changing was activating active directory services the second time. I do not know if this is the answer and maybe some expert will tell otherwise, or maybe this is a clue.

It seems to work fine now.

First of all, this is not so clear
are you running 2k pro or server ?
if you have the same name, it shouldn't matter

if i were you, i run static ip first,
try to rename your workgroup and reboot both machine
if you run server, then install WINS server and point your win98 to use the win2k server as a WINS server

Additional clues to this lengthy thread:

Computer A is running Win2kPro w/SP2
Computer B is running Win98

If I go into Computer B and Start|Run|\\Computername, I can see Computer A. So I assume A is sharing.
If I start explorer, click on network, after a long delay I do see both computer names. If I click on this computers name I do see the drives. However if I click on the Computer A's name I get the following error:
Computername is not accessible. The computer or sharename could not be found.

Doing the same thing on A gives me the following error:
\\computername is not accessible- The specified server can not perform the requested operation.

UPDATE

From the Win98 machine I can now see the Win2000 machine and have full rights to all folders.

From the Win2000 machine I can see the Win98 machine but can not see folders. I checked the win98 machine and I have file sharing checked. I have checked the individual drives in explorer and have checked to see that they are enabled to share.

So somewhere I am not giving the correct rights for file sharing on the win98 box.

Sorry dude,

i can't help you, because you DO NOT provide enough detail

MORE MORE INFORMATION

I now have both systems available to each other. This is a P2P hookup. The remaining problem is that on the Win98 machine when I go to explorer and expand the network folder it takes 4.5 minutes to display the computers on the network. On the Win2000Pro system it takes about 30 seconds.

On the Win 98 system the Network properties are:
client for microsoft network
dial up adapter
realtek nic
ipx-dial up
ipx-realtek
netbios for ipx
tcp/ip for dial up
tcp/ip for realtek
file and printer sharing for microsoft networks

Primary logon is the windows logon
File sharing is checked
Network identifications are correct
Using share level access control

???????????????

If i were you, i get rid off all those ipx thing unless you are really using it to connect to Novell

i will create a workgroup name and run static ip on win98 machine

this is what you should have on win98 machine
Client for Microsoft Network
Dial up Adapter (if you still using modem)
Realtek Nic
TCP/IP
File and Printer Sharing for Ms Network

done
under your tcp/ip, using static ip, it helps during boot up, cuz you don't have a DHCP server

good luck and let me know

heres a cumb idea....how is computer b logging in?
It possible to see the network but you wont access it if you dont have the right log on.
