My SM56 modem has a bad habit of disconnecting between 1 - 3 hours of use. I've downloaded and installed the latest drivers from Motorola, with no change. After that 1 - 3 hours, it will begin "Negotiating Connection" frequently; either disconnecting entirely ("Poor line quality", the modem says) or reducing the connection rate lower and lower. If I try to reconnect, the modem will usually only connect for a few minutes, if at all, before repeating this process. I would suspect line quality, except for the fact that if I reboot the computer, the modem works fine again for 1 - 3 hours. I'm at a loss at what to do! Help!!!

mine too and i did suspect line quality except wifeys computer with a pci modem connects consistantly and about 2000bps faster.I begin to think the modem is junk!!! oh by the way its a crapshoot whether it connects or not now..

You can put in the control string N0S37=12%n3, but I suspect yours is overheating.

I had the same problem until today.
I found the SM56 PCI modem doesn't seem to like sharing IRQ's with other devices. I noticed the modem software driver automatically picks up IRQ9 but in my PC (-a PII Celeron 300A o/clocked to 450M using 256M SDRAM)IRQ is shared with 3 other devices. By setting the PC BIOS to select IRQ 9 for the modem(a selectable option for the AOPEN AX6BC mother board)I rebooted today and found that after logging on the modem works perfectly! I've been downloading at 49kHz for 3 hours and the modem doesn't go into the "renegotiating speed mode" every few seconds like it was until now -almost exactly what you report.

If you want any other let me know.
