I'm working with a Gateway G6-333c; Celeron 333, 64MB RAM. I did an fdisk and reformatted the hdd, then installed win98 SE, I was running win95 initially. The problem is that after the install the computer is very sluggish. Response times are slow and even moving the mouse seems jerky. I've reinstalled win95 with no luck. I've installed win98 from the CD and the hdd, no luck. Checking resources after the install shows 97% free. I'm suspecting the display driver because windows isn't picking it up, it loads the generic driver. The display adapter is integrated with the system board. I've contacted Gateway and they claim the drivers for the G6-333c chipset are no longer available. So I guess my problem is, what's actually causing the computer to respond so slow, and if it is the display driver, how do I determine what adapter I'm using and attain the proper drivers? Thanks is advance for any help on this one.

The problem sounds like either your computer is to slow, but i think you said that you reinstalled win 95 and still had the problem correct? if not then your comp is just to slow to run win 98 properly, the other thing is becasue your video card is on the motherboard...correct? that it may be causeing the refresh rate relapses and stuff like that, i dont know where you could get drivers, but thats all i have for now. Also my advise...dont buy a gateway ;)

I know of a HP Pavilion Celeron 333 with 64MB RAM that runs a little slow on WIN98 but nothing like what you are describing. The system should work better than the way it is, but let's face it, it will be somewhat slow no matter how well you tweak it. "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing....." [morning]

You might want to crack the case to check out the fans...One thing I found on a customer's PC was that it was extremely slow in Safe Mode. We all know that it shouldn't be slow in safe mode...I cracked the case and the CPU was burning up...the fan had fallen off of it and there was no air circulation inside.

hmmmm....this is what I would do:

1. Keep looking for the Gateway video driver - that could definitely cause irratic behaviour and sluggishness going in and out of programs...

2. Open it up and try swapping out the parts that are removable. (To see if it is the memory or the CPU)

3. Put a small piece of paper up to the CPU fan to test how much it is blowing... it is unlikely to be the fan though, unless you notice this issue only after the computer has been running for awhile..

...bottom line, you should have more than enough power and memory there to run Win98 without any problem. In the future, you may want to stay away from integrated boards...

Did you look in Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs and see if it is listed there? "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing....." [morning]
